Day 7 Job Search Challenge: Leverage your Network

Did you know former U.S. President Barack Obama once joked during a TV press conference that he would join LinkedIn to help him land a job after his term was up!

Today’s tips and challenge is about doing just that.

Day 7: Leverage your network

Barack was on the right track. LinkedIn is a powerful professional network worthwhile tapping into if you aren’t already, that has the potential to build your professional profile, connect you with the right people and help search for roles.

But don’t stop your networking efforts there. The next step and today’s challenge and tips for increasing the success of your job search are focused on building a professional network (both online and offline) because you never know who in your network is holding the key to your next opportunity, or could introduce you to the person who does.

Our top tips for leveraging your network during your job search are:

  1. Focus your networking in the right places. Be seen where it matters the most and where you’re most likely to make great connections in your industry.
  2. Connect with individuals and for the right reasons. In other words, don’t become spam.
  3. Let people know you’re looking. If you don’t ask, you could be leaving an opportunity on the table. You can also use the feature on your LinkedIn profile to let recruiters know you’re open to being contacted, which won’t be seen by anyone else you’re connected with.
  4. Ask for an introduction. Know someone who know’s someone? Don’t be afraid to ask for an introduction and make the connection.
  5. Connect both online and offline. Met someone at an event? Connect on LinkedIn to stay in touch. Include networking and business events in your quest to build your network.

Tomorrow’s challenge will focus on putting your network to use in your job search, so stay tuned! Missed a day’s challenge? You can check back in on them here.
