Achieving Workplace Well Being in the Construction, Engineering and Property Industry

The Stratacon team got behind the R U OK? Day charity this month to help promote mental health awareness and workplace suicide prevention.

A huge thank you to everyone who supported us by donating much needed funds for these resources, helping us raise $1,270.32 in donations. We’ll be setting off on our 20km on Thursday 13th so be sure to keep an eye out for the yellow t-shirts along the bay!

At the forefront of workplace health and safety is our responsibility as recruiters to place candidates in positions and organisations that support mental health awareness, particularly within the construction industry.

“According to our research, every year 190 Australians who work in the industry take their own lives – that’s one every second day. This is mostly preventable,” said MATES in Construction Operations Manager, John Brady.

“Factors such as low control, job insecurity and high work demands combined with personal issues put workers in the construction industry at greater risk.”

R U OK? Day advocates everyday is a good day to ask a work mate if they are Ok, and have developed four conversation steps to give you the skills and confidence to navigate a conversation with someone you’re worried about.

  1. Ask
  2. Listen
  3. Encourage Action
  4. Checkin

Simply by starting a conversation and commenting on the changes you’ve noticed, you could help that family member, friend or workmate open up and let them know someone cares enough to ask.

You can find more information on how to ask someone if they’re Ok at www.ruok.org.au and if you’d like to make a donation visit our link at www.everydayhero.com
